Haigh sits on the western edge of Wigan in Greater Manchester, historically part of Lancashire. Perched above the valley of the River Douglas, the parish includes sheltered woodland and parkland with pleasant walks and views towards the West Pennine Moors and the West Lancashire Plain.
The area is best known for the stately Haigh Hall and the adjoining country and woodland park, where well‑kept paths, play areas and occasional events draw visitors. Haigh also carries a strong industrial past linked to the South Lancashire coalfield and associated iron and mining activity; today the community is largely residential, with leisure, heritage and outdoor recreation playing a significant part in the local economy and social life.
