Standish is a large village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, historically part of Lancashire, sitting a few miles north of Wigan town centre on the edge of the suburban belt. It has good road links to Manchester and the motorway network and is prized for its semi-rural feel, with easy access to the rolling countryside of the West Pennine Moors and nearby walking country around Rivington.
Locally the village retains a historic core - including St Wilfrid's Church and the site of the old Standish Hall - and a mix of housing, shops and pubs serving a largely residential, commuter population. Historically agricultural and later shaped by the wider coal and textile economies of the Wigan area, today Standish has active community organisations, a well-known secondary school (Standish Community High School) and a reputation as a pleasant base between town and countryside.
