Wirral

Metropolitan district in England

Coordinates:53.37, -3.07
OS grid ref:SJ 28 86

The Wirral sits on a peninsula between the River Mersey to the east and the River Dee to the west, with Liverpool Bay to the north. It contains a mix of suburbs and seaside towns, including Birkenhead and Wallasey, and coastal attractions such as New Brighton, West Kirby and the tidal Hilbre Islands.

Maritime and industrial history is strong, with former shipbuilding and dock activity around Birkenhead, and civic landmarks like Birkenhead Park, one of the first publicly funded parks in the world. The area has a lively local culture with festivals, independent shops and galleries, and good rail links into Liverpool on the Merseyrail network.

Today the economy blends commuter suburbs, light industry and port-related work, while tourism, coastal walking and birdwatching on the Dee Estuary are important. Extensive green belt and routes such as the Wirral Way give the peninsula a rural feel in places, and socially it ranges from affluent villages to more working-class neighbourhoods, making the Wirral quietly distinct from both Merseyside and neighbouring Cheshire.
