Rathcoole is a large post‑war housing estate in the borough of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland, sitting to the north of Belfast. Built largely in the 1950s by the then housing authorities to rehouse inner‑city families, it comprises a mix of social and privately owned homes, local shops, schools and community facilities, and is practical for commuters thanks to good road links into the city.
The area has a strong local identity and active community groups, and like many such estates has seen both social challenges and focused regeneration efforts over the years. Its history of post‑war planning, community centres and neighbourhood initiatives makes it notable locally for grassroots cultural and social activity rather than tourism or industry.
