Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland, situated where the River Lagan flows into Belfast Lough and overlooked by the Belfast Hills. Its coastal geography helped establish a powerful maritime and industrial economy from the 19th century, leaving a strong working‑class and shipbuilding heritage visible across the city.
Famous historically for the yards of Harland & Wolff and the building of the RMS Titanic, the city has repurposed much of its waterfront into the Titanic Quarter and cultural attractions. It combines higher education institutions such as Queen's University Belfast, theatres like the Grand Opera House and traditional hubs such as St George's Market with a growing tech and services sector.
Although the city carries memories of political conflict, decades of regeneration and community work have reshaped many neighbourhoods; civic life revolves around landmarks such as City Hall and the parliamentary buildings at Stormont. Today it draws visitors with museums including Titanic Belfast, festivals, lively music and dining scenes, all within a compact, walkable urban area.
