The Glenelly Valley lies within the rural uplands of County Tyrone in the Derry City and Strabane district, cutting through the foothills of the Sperrin Mountains. A narrow glacial valley shaped by the Glenelly River, it is sparsely populated with small settlements such as Plumbridge, where agriculture - largely sheep and cattle farming - dominates alongside growing small‑scale tourism, hill‑walking and angling.
The area shows a long rural history in field patterns and old churches and retains a strong community life with traditional music, Gaelic sport and seasonal events. Like many parts of rural Northern Ireland it faces economic challenges and depopulation, but its dramatic scenery, outdoor recreation opportunities and close‑knit communities make it a distinctive part of the local district.
