Whitehead South sits on the southern edge of the small coastal town of Whitehead in Mid and East Antrim, facing Belfast Lough. The ward retains a strong Victorian seaside character with a promenade, terraced streets and pleasant sea views across the lough towards County Down and Belfast, and it developed historically as both a local seaside resort and a commuter settlement served by the Belfast–Larne railway.
Today the area combines a residential, family-oriented feel with a modest local economy of shops, cafés and visitor-focused amenities; coastal walks and community-run activities underpin social life and there is a clear interest in preserving the built and natural heritage that gives the ward much of its appeal.
