Whitehead South sits on the southern edge of the small coastal town of Whitehead in Mid and East Antrim, facing Belfast Lough. The ward retains a strong Victorian seaside character with a promenade, terraced streets and pleasant sea views across the lough towards County Down and Belfast, and it developed historically as both a local seaside resort and a commuter settlement served by the Belfast–Larne railway.
