Aberdeen City

Council area in Scotland

Coordinates:57.15, -2.2
OS grid ref:NJ 87 07

Aberdeen City sits on the north‑east coast of Scotland, where the River Dee and River Don meet the North Sea. Often called the Granite City for its pale grey architecture, it combines Victorian and modern skylines with coastal promenades like Aberdeen Beach and the atmospheric streets of Old Aberdeen, home to historic buildings such as Marischal College.

Historically a fishing and shipbuilding port, the area was transformed by the North Sea oil boom and today mixes energy (oil, gas and growing offshore renewables), maritime trade through Aberdeen Harbour, and research and teaching around the University of Aberdeen. The city also has a lively cultural life - galleries and theatres including Aberdeen Art Gallery and His Majesty's Theatre - and a socially diverse population shaped by both local traditions and international workers.
