Gometra is a small, quietly dramatic island off the west coast of Mull in the Inner Hebrides, part of Argyll and Bute in Scotland. It is low and rocky with gentle hills and sheltered inlets, and is linked to the neighbouring island of Ulva by a simple footbridge, which in turn gives relatively easy access to the larger communities on Mull. The island’s name reflects its Norse heritage and the landscape still shows traces of old crofting settlements and ruined cottages from earlier centuries.
Today Gometra has a very small, often transient population and a largely pastoral economy centred on small-scale sheep farming, crofting and a few holiday lets; parts of the island are also managed with conservation in mind. Its quiet shores and rocky skerries attract seals, seabirds and otters, and the island’s combination of remoteness, history and community ties with Ulva and Mull give it a distinctive, off‑beat Hebridean charm.
