The small Hebridean island of Ulva sits off the west coast of Mull in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It’s known for a jagged, indented shoreline of cliffs and sheltered bays, pockets of ancient oak and machair, and a mild, oceanic climate that supports a rich mix of wildflowers, seabirds and roaming red deer.
Historically a Gaelic-speaking crofting community, Ulva experienced severe depopulation during the 18th and 19th century Clearances and still bears cairns, chapel ruins and old field systems. Today a small resident population combines crofting, conservation and modest tourism; island life is shaped by restoration projects, a creative streak of artists and writers, and simple passenger ferry connections with Mull and nearby Tobermory, which make it a popular destination for day visitors and wildlife enthusiasts.
