Mallaig is a compact fishing port on the west coast of Highland, Scotland, sitting on the Sound of Sleat and looking across to the Isle of Skye. It is the western terminus of the scenic West Highland line from Fort William - the route famed for the Jacobite steam train and views of the Glenfinnan Viaduct - and functions as a busy ferry hub for services to Skye and the Small Isles.
Originally built up in the 19th century as a fishing harbour, Mallaig still relies on fishing and aquaculture alongside a strong seasonal tourism trade; the working quay and local fish market remain important. The town retains Gaelic and crofting connections and feels lively in summer with boat traffic and day-trippers, but it keeps a quiet, community-focused character for much of the year.
