Ullapool is a compact fishing port and village on the shore of Loch Broom in the Highland region of Scotland, founded as a planned herring port in 1788. Nestled beneath the dramatic ridge of An Teallach and looking out towards the Summer Isles, it feels like a gateway to Wester Ross and the wider North West Highlands, with easy access to mountain walking, sea kayaking and wildlife watching.
Despite its small population it punches above its weight culturally and economically: fishing and aquaculture sit alongside a busy tourism trade, a lively arts scene (notably local galleries and venues) and a regular ferry link to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. It’s also the main stopping point on the A835 route to Inverness, combining a strong community feel with services and connections that keep it lively year-round.
