Shotton sits in the north-east of Flintshire in Wales, part of the wider Deeside conurbation beside the River Dee estuary. It lies close to neighbouring towns such as Queensferry and Connah's Quay and is within easy reach of the English city of Chester, giving it a mix of coastal plain and industrial-edge geography with important tidal wetland habitats nearby.
Historically the community grew up around the large steelworks established in the 19th century (notably John Summers & Sons) and that industrial heritage still shapes local identity; the plant and the surrounding Deeside industrial area have provided much employment, even as the local economy has diversified into light industry, logistics and retail. Social life reflects a working-class tradition with local clubs, churches and community groups, while the estuary and nearby green spaces offer a striking natural counterpoint to Shotton’s industrial past and present.
