Brithdir, Llanfachreth, Ganllwyd and Llanelltyd form a dispersed, largely rural ward in Gwynedd just west of Dolgellau on the southern fringe of Eryri. The area is noted for its ancient oak woods and waterfalls around the Dolmelynllyn estate, the nearby Mawddach estuary and the popular Mawddach Trail, with upland moor, river valleys and forest (including the mountain‑bike and walking trails of Coed y Brenin) defining the landscape.
Population is sparse and communities remain traditionally Welsh in character, with farming, forestry and tourism the mainstays of the local economy; visitors come for walking, wildlife and outdoor sports rather than built attractions. There are small historic churches and chapels reflecting a long rural past and close‑knit social life, so the ward feels like a quiet gateway to Snowdonia’s quieter, more wooded corners.
