Gwynedd is a largely rural unitary authority in north‑west Wales, occupying much of the mountainous heart of Snowdonia National Park and an indented, island‑studded coastline. It contains Yr Wyddfa (Mount Snowdon), dramatic glacial valleys, the Llyn Peninsula and estuaries, and historic landmarks such as Caernarfon Castle and the slate workings around Blaenau Ffestiniog, parts of the Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales World Heritage Site.
Culturally and socially Gwynedd is one of the strongest Welsh‑speaking areas in the country, with town centres like Bangor and small villages sustaining language and traditional music, eisteddfodau and community life. Its economy is built on tourism, agriculture and forestry, with lingering slate and maritime industries centred on ports such as Porthmadog; balancing conservation, local services and rural livelihoods is an ongoing challenge for the area.
