Dolgellau is a compact market town in Gwynedd, north‑west Wales, sitting on the banks of the River Wnion just inland from the Mawddach Estuary and at the southern edge of Snowdonia. Its narrow streets and Georgian facades give a pleasant historic centre, and the town is often described as a gateway to the hills - most notably Cadair Idris - so it attracts walkers, kayakers and cyclists who enjoy the dramatic local scenery.
Historically a centre for wool and slate and once the county town of Merionethshire, the area also has a quirky claim to fame in the nearby Clogau Gold Mine, associated with the region’s rare Welsh gold used in royal jewellery. Today tourism, outdoor‑sports businesses and a lively arts and craft scene are important to the local economy, alongside a strong Welsh language and community culture; nearby visitor draws include the Coed y Brenin mountain‑biking trails and the scenic Mawddach walking routes.
