Barmouth sits on the west coast of Gwynedd in Wales, where the wide River Mawddach meets Cardigan Bay. The town’s long sandy beach and the views across the Mawddach estuary to the Cambrian Mountains make it a popular base for walkers and beachgoers, and it is often described as a gateway to Snowdonia National Park.
Historically a busy little port and Victorian seaside resort, Barmouth still lives off tourism, watersports, fishing and the seasonal trade in holiday accommodation. The timber viaduct known as Barmouth Bridge and the coastal promenade are local landmarks, while the converted railway route of the Mawddach Trail, an active RNLI lifeboat station and a strong presence of Welsh language and community events give the town a distinctive maritime and cultural character.
