Wentlooge is a low-lying coastal parish on the western edge of Newport in south‑east Wales, set on the reclaimed marshes of the Caldicot Levels beside the Severn Estuary. Its flat, drained landscape is defined by sea defences and networks of rhynes and sluices, giving it a distinctive, open character compared with the hillier parts of the region.
The area retains a largely agricultural feel with grazing marshes and important birdlife, yet sits close to the urban fringe and transport links such as the M4, so it balances farming, conservation and pressures from nearby industry and housing growth; small hamlets and historic church sites hint at a long rural past even as the surroundings modernise.
