Gaer is a community and electoral ward to the north‑west of Newport, Wales, occupying high ground that looks down over the city and the River Usk. The area takes its name from an Iron Age hillfort, often called the Gaer, whose surviving earthworks sit within Gaer Park and afford broad views towards the Bristol Channel and the surrounding valleys.
Today Gaer is largely residential with a mix of housing, local shops, schools and community facilities; many residents commute into the city and nearby employment hubs. The ancient ramparts and green spaces give the neighbourhood a strong local identity and a visible link to Newport’s long history, while community groups and school life keep the area socially active.
