Kempston Rural is the predominantly countryside part of the historic Kempston area on the outskirts of Bedford in England, retaining a distinctly village feel with farms, small clusters of homes and winding lanes rather than the denser housing of the town. The civil parish was formed when the old, larger parish was split at the end of the 19th century, and it still shows that legacy in its mix of agricultural land, hedgerows and pockets of woodland that sit close to the river plain through Bedford.
Locally the character is shaped by rural life and a small-community atmosphere: many residents work on the land or run small businesses, while others commute via Bedford to larger employment centres such as Milton Keynes and London. The parish benefits from easy access to town services and rail links but remains valued for its open spaces, country walks and the quieter pace of life compared with the nearby urban area.
