Buckingham is a historic market town in Buckinghamshire, sited beside the winding River Great Ouse and centred on a medieval street pattern with a surviving motte at Castle Hill. The town shows a lot of Georgian character around its high street and civic buildings, and local heritage is interpreted at the Buckingham Old Gaol and the parish church; the atmosphere remains distinctly market-town rather than suburban sprawl.
It also hosts the small independent University of Buckingham, which gives the town a lively student presence alongside traditional weekly markets, community events and local shops. Economically the area leans towards services and light industry, with many residents commuting to nearby centres such as Milton Keynes, Oxford or London, yet it retains a strong local identity and active civic life.
