Holywell Green and Stainland sit together on a gritstone ridge in the upper Calder Valley, within Calderdale in England, affording wide views over moorland towards Halifax and on to Leeds. Their elevated position and good transport links made them useful in earlier packhorse and industrial eras and now make them a popular, peaceful commuter base.
The villages keep a strong local character: stone-built terraces, former woollen mills repurposed as homes or workshops, a conservation-minded centre and landmarks such as Stainland Cross. Community life centres on village pubs, local groups and walking routes across the surrounding moors, while the area’s textile heritage and vernacular architecture give it a distinctly Yorkshire feel.
