Todmorden is a market town in the Upper Calder Valley within the metropolitan borough of Calderdale in England, tucked into steep Pennine valleys along the River Calder. The town is framed by moorland and landmarks such as the hill‑top column of Stoodley Pike, with old stone terraces and former textile mills clustered along the valley floor while the Rochdale Canal and the Calder Valley railway line thread through the town.
Originally built on cotton and wool manufacture during the Industrial Revolution, Todmorden has reinvented itself with a lively independent high street, strong community activism (notably the Incredible Edible food‑growing movement), small creative and service businesses, and a popular market; it also attracts walkers and commuters travelling to Manchester and Leeds. The result is a distinct social character that blends heritage architecture, grassroots cultural projects and easy access to the Pennines and the wider West Yorkshire valleys.
