Weir sits on the eastern side of the borough of Rossendale in Lancashire, England, tucked into the valley of the River Irwell and within easy reach of Rawtenstall. The village’s steep valley sides, stone-built terraces and wooded cloughs reflect the character of the Rossendale valley and give good views towards the nearby Pennines.
Historically Weir grew as a small textile and quarrying community in the 19th century, with streams and millponds driving local industry; many former mill buildings and workers’ cottages still shape the built environment. Today it is largely residential and commuter-orientated, with local pubs, community groups and handy access to country walks, valued for its strong local identity and proximity to both rural moors and centres such as Rawtenstall and Manchester.
