Totternhoe is a small village and civil parish on the southern edge of Central Bedfordshire, tucked beneath the chalk escarpment of the Dunstable Downs in the Chiltern Hills. The local skyline is dominated by the grassy slopes of Totternhoe Knolls and the scar of Totternhoe Quarry, giving the area striking views and a richness of chalk grassland wildlife that attracts walkers and naturalists.
Historically the village made its name from quarrying the locally quarried Totternhoe Stone, used in medieval churches and other buildings, and earthworks of a Norman motte-and-bailey remain nearby. Today it’s a rural community of traditional stone and thatch cottages, farming and small local businesses, with many residents commuting to nearby Dunstable and Luton, while village life centres on a parish church, community events and the landscape that shapes much of its character.
