Bollington is a compact former mill town in Cheshire East, set in a steep-sided valley at the western edge of the Pennines. It overlooks the gritstone ridge of Kerridge Hill, topped by the distinctive white folly White Nancy, and is threaded by the towpath of the Macclesfield Canal, making it popular with walkers and cyclists and providing dramatic views towards the nearby Peak District.
Its 19th-century cotton industry shaped much of the built environment, and many old mills and canal-side buildings have been repurposed into homes, studios and independent businesses, giving a strong sense of local identity. Today Bollington combines a lively arts and community scene with small-scale manufacturing and service firms, and it’s also a convenient commuter base for people working in Manchester and Stockport.
