Macclesfield Forest and Wildboarclough sit on the eastern fringe of the Peak District within Cheshire East, a landscape of gritstone edges, rolling moor and patchy oak and conifer woodland. The area includes upland reservoirs such as Trentabank, dramatic tors and the unmistakable cone of Shutlingsloe, and is prized for walking, mountain biking and wide views across the Cheshire Plain and Peak scenery.
Historically the forest was part of a medieval royal hunting forest and today the local economy is a mix of upland sheep farming, water supply infrastructure and rural tourism; small scattered communities keep a largely quiet, village character. The mixture of woodlands, moor and reservoirs supports local wildlife and recreation, while place names like Wildboarclough hint at the area’s long human and natural history.
