Crantock sits on the north coast of Cornwall in England, just a short drive from Newquay. The parish is centred on a pretty village and a broad, sandy foreshore at Crantock Beach, backed by dunes and the sheltered salt marshes of the Gannel estuary. The tidal River Gannel and its mudflats are important for birdlife and add a strong sense of wild, changing landscape - walkers and surfers both make regular use of the shore, but the tides mean people need to take care.
Historically the village grew up around its medieval church dedicated to St Carantoc and a mix of farming, fishing and later tourism has shaped local life. Today tourism and holiday accommodation sit alongside a close-knit village community with a pub, village hall and active conservation groups working to protect the dunes and estuary; that balance between seasonal visitors and long‑standing local traditions is a notable feature of the place.
