Eldon Lane is a small village in County Durham, a few miles from Bishop Auckland and within easy reach of Durham. It sits on the fringe of the Durham coalfield and, like many settlements in the area, reflects a mining past with rows of former miners’ cottages and traces of industrial infrastructure; today it feels rural and residential, with quiet lanes, nearby walking country and a community that leans on local groups and amenities rather than big commercial centres.
Coundon Grange is another compact former colliery village close to Coundon and the Bishop Auckland area, shaped by 19th- and 20th-century coalworking and the social networks that grew up around the pits. Since the decline of mining it has changed economically but retains a strong local identity, visible in community organisations, village facilities and the surrounding farmland and hedgerows that link it to the wider Durham countryside.
