Coundon and Leeholme are neighbouring villages in County Durham, England, a few miles north‑west of Bishop Auckland and close to Crook, with Durham city not far to the east. They sit within the rolling post‑industrial landscape of the old Durham coalfield, with terraces, reclaimed spoil sites and stretches of farmland and hedgerow that give the area a mix of semi‑rural and suburban feel.
Both communities expanded in the 19th and early 20th centuries around coal mining and associated industries, and that industrial past still shapes local architecture and social life; pit closures in the mid‑20th century brought economic change and a period of decline, followed by gradual regeneration. Today they retain a strong local identity with schools, pubs and community groups, a commuter population working in nearby towns, and small pockets of light industry alongside efforts to conserve elements of their mining heritage.
