Newburn is a riverside suburb and former village in the west of Newcastle upon Tyne, sitting on the north bank of the River Tyne between areas such as Scotswood and Blaydon. The compact centre and the old Newburn Bridge give it a distinct riverside character, with towpaths and green spaces that make it popular for walking and cycling along the Tyne.
Historically it was an industrial and mining community - famously the site of the 1640 Battle of Newburn - and later home to coal, brick and other river-related industries. Much of that heavy industry has gone, leaving a mix of commuter housing, local shops, pubs and community groups; the shift has turned Newburn into a quieter, community-focused part of the city with convenient access to central Newcastle upon Tyne and the surrounding countryside.
