Great Aycliffe is a civil parish in County Durham in north‑east England, centred on the post‑war new town of Newton Aycliffe and older settlements such as Aycliffe Village. It occupies largely flat lowland with pockets of parkland and the River Skerne nearby, and sits conveniently between Durham and Teesside, so it functions both as a commuter area and a local service centre.
The parish has a strong industrial and manufacturing identity: Aycliffe Business Park is one of the largest employment sites in the North East, hosting engineering, manufacturing and logistics firms. The town grew around wartime munitions works and the memory of the women who worked there - locally known as the Aycliffe Angels - remains part of the area’s history, while active community groups, sports clubs and village traditions contribute to its social life.
