Peterlee is a post‑war new town in County Durham, created after 1948 to house coal miners and their families and named for the Durham miners' leader Peter Lee. It sits in the gently rolling lowlands of east Durham, close to the Durham coast and nearby former mining settlements such as Seaham, and has long been tied into the region by major road links towards Durham and the wider north‑east.
Historically dominated by mining, the town has gone through waves of change since the pits closed, with industrial estates, retail development and regeneration projects now forming much of the local economy. Cultural life is marked by its modernist heritage - most famously the concrete Apollo Pavilion by Victor Pasmore - and a strong community identity rooted in its labour and social housing origins, with ongoing efforts to diversify employment and improve local facilities.
