Sherburn Hill is a small former colliery village in County Durham, in the north-east England region, lying just east of the larger village of Sherburn and a few miles from the city of Durham. Perched on a modest rise, it was shaped by the Durham Coalfield and the 19th- and 20th-century colliery that led to the rows of miners’ terraces and local institutions such as working men’s clubs and chapels.
Since the pits closed, Sherburn Hill has become largely residential, with many people commuting to nearby towns while village life centres on local amenities, clubs and community events. Visible reminders of its industrial past sit alongside farmland and reclaimed industrial land, giving the place a mixed rural and industrial heritage and a strong local identity.
