Cockermouth sits in the historic county of Cumberland in north‑west England, at the confluence of the River Cocker and the River Derwent, on the edge of the Lake District National Park. The compact town centre mixes medieval and Georgian streetscapes, with the gatehouse and remnants of Cockermouth Castle and a handsome stone bridge giving it a distinctly historic feel.
It is the birthplace of William Wordsworth, and that literary connection feeds a lively cultural life alongside regular markets, independent shops and a tourism‑focused economy supplemented by small manufacturers and services. The town is also notable for severe flooding in 2009 and 2015, events that prompted strong community recovery efforts and newer flood defences that form part of its recent social history.
