The neighbouring villages of Great Broughton and Little Broughton sit in historic Cumberland on the fringe of the Solway Plain, close to the tidal reaches of the River Derwent and with easy views towards the western fells of the Lake District. They are compact settlements of stone-built houses and farms linked by a single main road, making them handy bases for both coastal towns and countryside walking.
Originally agricultural, both villages expanded in the 19th and early 20th centuries with employment from nearby mining, quarrying and the industrial activity around towns such as Workington and Maryport, so you still see miners’ cottages and a tangible community spirit in local events, the village hall and pubs. Today many people commute to regional centres while others work in tourism, farming or small local firms, and the Broughtons are prized for their rural character, local history and access to walking and cycling routes.
