Belper sits on the banks of the River Derwent in the Amber Valley of Derbyshire, England, about eight miles north of Derby and close to the edge of the Peak District. The town occupies a steep, wooded valley, which helped drive the early water-powered mills and still gives Belper a mix of riverside green spaces, mill buildings and rows of workers' terraces.

Belper is best known for its role in the Industrial Revolution: the Strutt family’s textile mills and associated housing are at the heart of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, and several restored mill buildings and museums draw visitors. Today it combines light industry, independent shops and a strong local community with annual arts and food events, while many residents commute to nearby towns for work.
