Burton upon Trent is a market town in East Staffordshire, Staffordshire, England, straddling the banks of the River Trent in the Midlands and lying between Derby and Stoke-on-Trent. Its naturally hard, mineral-rich water made it a major brewing centre from the 18th century onwards, giving rise to large breweries and a distinctive pale-ale reputation; the town’s brewing legacy is still visible in surviving Victorian brewery architecture and in attractions such as the National Brewery Centre.
Originally a medieval market and abbey settlement - home to Burton Abbey - the town expanded rapidly in Victorian times as canals and railways, including the Trent and Mersey Canal, fuelled industry. Today Burton blends riverside regeneration, green walks and industrial heritage with a strong local identity centred on brewing and community life, sport and events.
