Pleasley is a village and civil parish in the district of Bolsover, in Derbyshire, lying on the edge of the Nottinghamshire coalfield between Mansfield and Chesterfield. It occupies a pleasant position around Pleasley Vale, a steep-sided, wooded valley carved by the River Meden, with mill ponds, footpaths and easy access to surrounding countryside and historic houses such as Hardwick Hall.
The settlement grew up in the 19th century around coal mining and textile mills - Pleasley Pit and the Pleasley Vale mill complex were once major employers - and that industrial past still defines much of the local character. Today former colliery and mill sites are part of a conservation and heritage landscape, with a country-park feel, converted mill buildings and a village community that mixes commuting to nearby towns with outdoor recreation, local clubs and heritage interest.
