Hathersage is a village and civil parish in the Derbyshire Dales district of Derbyshire, in central England, sitting in the Hope Valley of the Peak District on the banks of the River Derwent. It’s a popular base for walkers and climbers because of nearby gritstone edges such as Stanage Edge, and the village is served by a station on the Hope Valley Line, giving good links to Sheffield and beyond.
Hathersage blends a tourism-led economy of cafes, pubs and craft shops with a history of small-scale industry such as tool and needle-making and riverside mills. Notable local sights include the parish church St Michael and All Angels, whose churchyard is said to contain the tomb of Little John, and nearby North Lees Hall, a building often linked with Charlotte Brontë and thought to have inspired scenes in Jane Eyre; the village retains an active community life alongside its steady stream of visitors and commuters.
