Ashton-under-Lyne is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside, part of Greater Manchester, lying on the banks of the River Tame at the edge of the Pennines. It grew from medieval market roots into a centre of cotton and textile manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution, with canals such as the Ashton Canal and rows of former mills still shaping the townscape; good transport links include the Metrolink tram into Manchester.
The town mixes industrial heritage and green high ground - the Portland Basin Museum interprets local canal and factory history, while nearby Werneth Low offers panoramic views towards the Peak District. Today Ashton combines retail and light industry with ongoing regeneration projects and a diverse community, so its past and present sit side by side.
