Castleton sits at the head of the Hope Valley in the High Peak district of Derbyshire, inside the Peak District National Park in England. The village is ringed by notable hills such as Mam Tor and the Great Ridge, and is famous for its spectacular show caves – notably Blue John Cavern and Peak Cavern – where the semi-precious Blue John stone is found and small guided tours still run for visitors and cavers alike.
Historically centred on the ruined Peveril Castle and a long legacy of lead mining, Castleton now relies heavily on tourism, walking and outdoor sports, with a lively village scene of independent shops, tearooms and pubs that serve both visitors and local residents. Annual events and a strong conservation culture reflect its role as a gateway to the Peaks, balancing visitor demand with preservation of landscape and heritage.
