High Peak

Local authority district in Derbyshire, England

Coordinates:53.35, -1.85
OS grid ref:SK 09 83

High Peak is a local authority district in Derbyshire, England, mostly covering the north‑western fringe of the Peak District National Park. The area is dominated by gritstone edges, upland moors and dramatic ridges - notable high points include Kinder Scout and Mam Tor - and contains market towns such as Buxton, Glossop, New Mills, Chapel‑en‑le‑Frith and Whaley Bridge.

Culturally and economically the district mixes tourism, outdoor recreation and rural industries: Buxton is a Victorian spa town with notable architecture, while Castleton is famous for its Blue John caverns at Blue John Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern. Historic lead mining, limestone quarrying and the old Cromford and High Peak Railway have left tracks now used for walking and cycling as the High Peak Trail. Parts of the district, particularly around Glossop and New Mills, also serve as commuter hinterlands for nearby Greater Manchester, giving the area a mix of rural character and modern connectivity.
