Clay Cross is a compact former industrial town in North East Derbyshire, Derbyshire, England, situated on the A61 between Chesterfield and Alfreton and close to the edge of the Peak District. It has a distinctly Victorian streetscape of terraced housing and former works sites and sits handy for commuters heading to Derby and Sheffield, while retaining a strong local community feel.
The town grew up in the 19th century around coal mining, ironworks and the Clay Cross Company established by the railway engineer George Stephenson, so industrial heritage shapes much of its character. Since the decline of heavy industry it has seen light industrial and retail development and modest regeneration efforts, with community amenities and local clubs reflecting its working‑class history and resilient social fabric.
