The village and estate of Dartington lies in the steep, wooded valley of the River Dart a couple of miles south of Totnes in the South Hams district of Devon, England. The landscape is marked by rolling farmland, ancient woodland and the extensive historic parkland of the Dartington Hall estate, with footpaths and trails popular with walkers.
Dartington is best known for the ambitious 20th-century experiment by Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst which transformed the medieval manor into a hub for progressive education, arts and crafts and conservation; today the estate hosts arts events, workshops and small enterprises, and is home to institutions such as Schumacher College and the long-running Dartington International Summer School, giving the local economy a mix of tourism, education and creative industries alongside a strong community feel.
