Buckfastleigh is a small market town in the district of Teignbridge, Devon, England, set in a steep, wooded valley on the banks of the River Dart at the southern edge of Dartmoor. The town’s character is shaped by dramatic river gorges, surrounding moorland and a history as a milling centre, with stone-built streets and remnants of its industrial past tucked into a largely rural landscape.
Its best-known landmark is Buckfast Abbey, re-established by Benedictine monks in the late 19th century and famous for its honey, the Buckfast tonic wine and the Buckfast bee bred by Brother Adam. Tourism and heritage are important to the local economy: the terminus of the South Devon Railway brings visitors from Totnes, while walkers, wildlife enthusiasts and a tight-knit community keep a lively programme of local shops, events and crafts.
