Modbury is a small hilltop market town in the South Hams district of Devon, England, sitting about ten miles east of Plymouth and within easy reach of the South Devon coast. It still shows a compact medieval street pattern with a market square, a historic church and a mix of Georgian and vernacular buildings tucked into the surrounding rolling countryside.
The town has a strong community feel and an economy rooted in local agriculture, independent shops and small-scale artisan producers, with many residents commuting to nearby centres. Modbury is also known for its community-led sustainability projects – it was an early adopter of the Transition Town ethos and local initiatives on food, energy and reducing single-use plastics – and continues to host active local events and volunteer groups that help define its social life.
