Doncaster sits in South Yorkshire on the banks of the River Don, occupying a mix of urban centres, agricultural vale and low-lying peatland of the Humberhead Levels. The borough also encompasses towns and villages such as Conisbrough, Bawtry and Mexborough, and benefits from easy road links via the A1(M) and M18.
Its roots go back to a Roman fort and the area wears its history openly - from the Norman keep at Conisbrough Castle to a rich railway and industrial heritage centred on Doncaster Works. Culturally it is well known for horse racing at Doncaster Racecourse, local museums and a programme of festivals and community events that celebrate both industrial and rural traditions.
Today the local economy balances logistics and distribution hubs with retail and tourism: large distribution parks and developments such as iPort sit alongside visitor attractions like the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Recent years have seen regeneration of the waterfront and town centre shopping around the Frenchgate Centre, while social and cultural initiatives try to knit together a diverse and changing population.
