Fortuneswell is the compact, steeply sloped village that forms the main settlement on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England. Perched above the shore it has narrow, winding streets and terraces built from the famous local Portland stone, and looks out towards Portland Harbour and the long shingle spine of Chesil Beach as part of the Jurassic Coast landscape.
The village expanded rapidly in the 19th century with large-scale quarrying and the building of harbour and naval facilities, and the island’s stone has been used in national buildings such as St Paul’s Cathedral. Today Fortuneswell mixes that maritime and industrial heritage with tourism, climbing and diving activity, small independent shops and a close-knit community feel, while landmarks like the old Verne fort continue to mark its historic role.
