Southwell is a small coastal village on the eastern side of the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England. Tucked into the dramatic limestone landscape of the Jurassic Coast, it sits close to the shingle of Chesil Beach and has easy access to the sheltered waters of Portland Harbour, with Portland Bill and its famous headland a short drive away.
Historically tied to fishing and the island’s long tradition of Portland stone quarrying, Southwell today is a quiet, community‑centred place with holiday accommodation, local services and plenty of outdoor appeal for walkers, climbers and birdwatchers. It lies within easy reach of the island’s larger settlements such as Easton and Fortuneswell, and benefits from tourism, maritime activity and a close‑knit local social scene.
